Ready to dive into the fascinating world where biology meets magnetism? Join us for the upcoming Magnetomicrobiological Spring School – an opportunity to explore the wonders of magnetotactic bacteria land related research fields!
This workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to the exciting field of magnetomicrobiology and provides practical training in laboratory techniques. You will learn how to collect samples from ponds and grow magnetotactic bacteria in a laboratory setting. Training also includes methods for analyzing samples using light microscopy and tracking bacterial movement. A tour of the Chair of Microbiology facilities will be provided.
Beyond the practical training, the Spring School includes a series of lectures by experts. Gain deep insights into topics such as magnetosome biosynthesis from Dirk Schüler and magneto-aerotaxis and evolution with Daniel Pfeiffer, explore the world of magneto-protists led by Bill Orsi, and the ancient records of magnetofossils with Stuart Gilder. Michael Winkelhofer will share fascinating discoveries on magnetoreception in animals, and Monika Korte will address the implications of the geomagnetic field's time and amplitude variance for life on Earth.
This is an essential event for anyone from our priority program keen to bridge the gap between microbiology, geomagnetism, and Earth sciences.
Number of attendees limited, please register early!
The workshop will take place in the rooms of the University of Bayreuth.
Hotel rooms in the Hotel Ibis are reserved for participants from 8.4. - 10.4.2025. If you cannot reach your home with the train on Friday evening (trains departing Bayreuth after 19:00 should be reached) you can stay another night in the hotel. Please check train connections rights now and book the extra night here if needed to reserve a room for April 10-11.
